Public Lectures Sponsored by Sigma Xi for Fall/Spring 2024-2025:
25 October 2025 - KAPLAN AWARD LECTURE (Flyer)
Distinguished Professor and Distinguished Teacher, Center for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences, Schools of Biological Sciences and Chemical & Biomolecular Sciences, College of Agriculture, Life & Physical Sciences, Southern Illinois University Carbondale
Public Lecture: Developing a better understanding of the fate and effects of organic contaminants in the environment
Time and Place: 4:00 CST, Neckers Building, Room 240
Abstract: The Lydy laboratory is at the forefront of environmental toxicology research, diving deep into the intricate world of agrochemicals and their impacts. Their groundbreaking studies unravel the mysteries of how these chemicals move and change in the environment and explore how multiple stressors intertwine to affect aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. By delving into the complex interplay of chemical and biological factors, they are pioneering new understandings of toxicity, bioavailability, and bioaccumulation. Their research is not just advancing science; it’s transforming our approach to protecting the environment.
14 October 2024
Francine McCarthy, PhD., Brock University, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada
Francine McCarthy is a micropaleontologist doing paleoenvironmental reconstruction through pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs. Her research spans locations from small lakes to abyssal marine environments. In 2023, her team's work at Ontario's Crawford Lake was selected by stratigraphers for its exemplary evidence of human caused planetary change, which marked the earth's geological departure from the Holocene. MacCarthy will visit SIU Carbondale to share this significant research.
Public Lecture: Finding the Golden Spike & the Onset of the Anthropocene
Time and Place: Reception, 3:00pm CST; Talk, 4:00 pm CST, Guyon Auditorium, Morris Library
